Donald Trump approved an order earlier this month that imposed “catastrophic” tariffs, putting 10% on Chinese goods and 25% on items imported from Canada and Mexico, in an effort to “hold China, Mexico, and Canada accountable for their promises to halt the flood of poisonous drugs into the US.”
And as a sort of consolation, it seems that an American couple chose to offer to cover the cost of every patron’s lunch at a Canadian restaurant.
Trump is “taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into [the] country,” according to a White House press statement announcing the tariffs.
“There is growing production of fentanyl in Canada, and enough fentanyl was seized at the northern border last fiscal year to kill 9.8 million Americans,” the court ruling stated. “Additionally, illegal border crossings from Canada reached historic new highs every year for the last four fiscal years.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cautioned that the White House’s actions would ultimately “split” rather than “bring us together” and that the tariffs would “have real consequences” for “the American people.”However, proving the rift may not cause a divide among citizens of both countries were an American couple and customers at Toast restaurant on Erie street in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Customers have now complained that the Ann Arbor pair, Sarah and Bill, paid for everyone’s meals when they were there.
When the couple paid for everyone’s meals, Aileen Ganley-Mutter was there with her godchildren.
“We were all kind of shocked because that doesn’t happen, because there’s about 50 to 60 people in there,” she stated to CBC.

Customers reportedly tried to convince the couple to let them contribute to the tip, but they refused, stating that it was “the least” they “could do.”
“They said […] they weren’t going to stop supporting Canada and loving Canada, and they felt bad for the rift that it was causing, so it was just very generous,” said Ganley-Mutter.
And May Hermiz, a co-owner of the restaurant, said she was “stunned” since in the nine years that the establishment has been open, “nobody has ever paid for the whole restaurant.”
“Everyone was cheering,” she remembered. They were clapping and encouraging them.”
According to Hermiz, the woman informed customers, “She doesn’t support what the United States is doing to us and she hates it.” She’s thrilled that we won the hockey game, and it’s a small gesture of gratitude for Canadians. She also loves us and loves to support her hometown.”
The thoughtful gesture comes after President Trump reiterated his intention to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canada on Monday, February 24: “This is an abuse that took place for many, many years. The tariffs will go forward, yes, and we’re going to make up a lot of territory.”
