President Donald Trump expressed strong discontent with Harvard University on Thursday, using his social media platform, Truth Social, to label the prestigious institution a “threat to democracy.”
In his post, Trump described Harvard as “an Anti-Semitic, Far Left Institution,” criticizing its international student body for allegedly fostering division within the United States. He further accused the university of permitting a “certain group of crazed lunatics” to spread “fake anger and hate” on campus. Trump’s remarks appeared to reference the ongoing legal disputes between the Trump administration and the university, particularly regarding the institution’s hiring and admission practices, as well as its diversity programs.
Trump continued by suggesting that Harvard’s actions were contradictory, claiming the institution had shifted its stance since their legal confrontations began. He also targeted a lawyer representing Harvard, who also works for the Trump Organization, calling for the attorney’s immediate resignation. Trump implied that the lawyer was ineffective and urged his company, now managed by his sons, to part ways with the individual.
This criticism came amid the university’s legal battle with the Trump administration, after Harvard’s refusal to meet certain demands led to the loss of $2.2 billion in federal funding. Additionally, Trump had proposed actions against Harvard’s tax-exempt status and suggested that international students could be barred from enrolling, through the Department of Homeland Security.
Harvard’s president, Alan Garber, responded to these ongoing tensions in an NBC News interview, asserting that the university would not compromise on certain issues. He emphasized the importance of defending academic freedom, stating, “We are defending what I believe is one of the most important lynchpins of the American economy and way of life — our universities.”
