Nintendo issues major update on cost of Switch 2 after Trump’s tariffs threatened already ‘ridiculous’ price

Nintendo has officially confirmed the pricing details for its upcoming gaming console, the Nintendo Switch 2, despite economic uncertainty arising from proposed trade tariffs between the United States and Japan.

The initial pre-order window for the console, originally expected to open on April 9, was postponed amid heightened concerns regarding U.S. trade policy. Recent developments have seen the U.S. administration propose a 24 percent tariff on Japanese imports, although these levies have been temporarily suspended for 90 days while both nations engage in diplomatic negotiations.

Prior to the tariff announcement, the Nintendo Switch 2 was slated to launch in the U.S. at a retail price of $449.99. Anticipated game prices, including Mario Kart World at $79.99, had raised concerns that the total cost of purchasing the console and key titles could exceed $560 if the tariffs were to take effect.

Addressing these concerns, Nintendo issued a public statement on April 18 confirming that:

“Retail pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 will begin on April 24, 2025.
At launch, the price for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will remain as announced on April 2 at $449.99, and the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle will remain at $499.99.
Pricing for both physical and digital versions of Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Donkey Kong Bananza ($69.99) will also remain unchanged at launch.”

This announcement reassured consumers that despite the economic backdrop, the pricing for the console and its major launch titles would remain stable.

However, Nintendo also noted that other product lines may not be unaffected. The company stated that:

“Nintendo Switch 2 accessories will experience price adjustments from those announced on April 2 due to changes in market conditions. Other adjustments to the price of any Nintendo product are also possible in the future depending on market conditions.”

The company concluded by acknowledging the delay in opening pre-orders and expressed appreciation for customer understanding, reiterating its commitment to delivering the new console as scheduled on June 5, 2025.
