Trump administration accused of ‘waging war’ on masturbation with new ‘harmful’ US law

A newly proposed bill in Texas has ignited widespread public concern, drawing criticism toward the administration of former President Donald Trump and its Republican allies.

Earlier this month, Republican State Senator Angela Paxton — spouse of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — introduced legislation that would impose criminal penalties on online retailers selling what are legally defined as “obscene devices” without implementing age verification procedures. Under the Texas penal code, such devices include items like dildos or artificial vaginas, characterized as being primarily designed for the stimulation of human genitalia.

If passed, the legislation would mandate online retailers to verify the age of purchasers prior to completing any transactions involving such products. Failure to comply could result in a penalty of up to one year in prison and a fine of $4,000.

In tandem with this measure, a separate bill introduced by Republican lawmakers in the state seeks to restrict the sale of adult devices by large retailers such as Walmart, Target, and CVS. Under this proposed legislation, such products could only be sold by establishments classified as “sexually oriented businesses,” including adult stores and certain entertainment venues.

These legislative efforts have prompted criticism from various media outlets and public figures, who argue that such policies represent undue government intrusion into citizens’ private lives. Critics have framed the initiatives as part of a broader cultural campaign against personal autonomy and sexual expression.

Several experts in sexual health and wellness have also voiced concerns about the potential consequences of these measures. Dr. Shamyra Howard, a licensed clinical social worker and sex educator, emphasized the psychological and social harm the legislation could inflict. In remarks to the Dallas Observer, Dr. Howard stated that requiring identification for the purchase of adult devices sends a damaging message — one that suggests pleasure should be monitored and controlled.

“This kind of legislation doesn’t protect individuals,” Dr. Howard argued. “Instead, it creates a climate of shame around something that is both normal and beneficial. It imposes unnecessary barriers and reinforces stigmas that public health professionals have worked for years to overcome.”

Dr. Howard also highlighted the broader utility of such devices, pointing out their role in addressing a range of health concerns. She noted that adult devices are not solely intended for pleasure, but are also utilized in the management of conditions such as erectile dysfunction, diabetic neuropathy, poor circulation, and pelvic pain. Additionally, they can support mental health by alleviating stress and facilitating the restoration of intimacy following trauma or medical procedures.

The proposed legislation remains under consideration, but it has already sparked significant public discourse about privacy, bodily autonomy, and the role of government in regulating personal wellness.
